A THOUSAND PETALS If the dust of my footsteps struggling, stumbling, obscures paintings of birch trees, deafens me to laughter rising from the bonds of friends, detaches me from love passing from one into the dreams of another and numbs me to the sweetness of being unconquerable when bare feet touch the earth's pavement, its grass, its sand, then my heart is only a leafless branch, its thousand bony fingers reaching into the night learning the feel of darkness. But if I dare to look - if the rain falling from my eyes clears the dust clouds from my senses and drowns the insistent false protection of indifference then my heart can grow as a wildflower field a thousand fluttering petals reaching into the blue discovering the feel of light.
