WHY POETRY Poetry is a unique art form that is immediate and can be carried with you. At any time, no matter where you are, poetry can release you from the mundane, the oppression, the suffering, the boredom, simply entertain you, or lift you into the sweetness of aesthetics. In any given moment, you can leave the world you are in behind and enter another, surrounded by whatever you choose. Suddenly you are standing in a wildflower field, in a Japanese shrine encircled with cherry trees, on a dirt road at twilight drinking with friends or under a bridge in New York, the skyline spread out before you.

With poetry, you may find that, in a few lines, your most private self, your pain, joy or desires might finally be understood. In the darkness of night, whether lonely or kept company by starlight; under the warmth of the sun or caught in the glare of fluorescent lights - tucked inside your poetry book is a secret sanctuary. Opening the pages, you can step inside, then return refreshed, the poem's lingering atmosphere helping to make the heaviness of reality just a little bit lighter.
